I'm Igor Alvarez Cugat, an Argentinian theatre director based in Amsterdam and an ECHO Ambassador. My work sits between the beautiful and the disturbing, mixing symbolism, realism and surrealism to explore identity, power, religion, family and what it means to grow up feeling like you don't belong.

I started making theatre at 12, inspired by my great-uncles, Francis and Xavier Cugat. Since then, I've been drawn to stories that challenge what we take for granted and give a voice to experiences that often remain unseen, particularly within queer communities.

In 2022, I graduated in theatre directing from the Amsterdam University of the Arts. My work exploring mental health and self-esteem in queer and trans communities received the Best of Fringe Award in 2023.

At the moment, I'm currently developing Embodied Voice Theatre, a performance practice that plays with the relationship between the body and the voice, using lip-sync, recordings and personal testimonies to explore memory, identity and the stories we carry inside us.
